Your day trip begins with a pickup from your hotel or riad in Fes. We'll embark on a scenic drive of approximately 1.5 hours through the fertile Saiss plains, dotted with olive groves and wheat fields, towards the ancient Roman city of Volubilis. Upon arrival, you'll meet your local guide for an immersive tour of this impressive archaeological site. Wander through the remarkably well-preserved ruins, admiring intricate mosaics, the grand Triumphal Arch, the Basilica, the Capitol, and former Roman villas, learning about the city's history as a thriving outpost of the Roman Empire.
After exploring Volubilis, we take a short drive to the nearby holy town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun. Perched dramatically on two hills, this town is one of Morocco's most important pilgrimage sites, as it holds the tomb of Moulay Idriss I, the founder of Morocco's first Islamic dynasty. While non-Muslims cannot enter the mausoleum itself, you can explore the charming narrow streets of the town, soak in its spiritual atmosphere, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Volubilis from a viewpoint.
Next, we continue to the Imperial City of Meknes, founded in the 11th century and later made a capital by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. We'll stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Meknes (not included). Afterwards, with a local guide, you'll discover the city's historical highlights, including the magnificent Bab Mansour Laleuj, one of the most beautiful gates in Morocco. We'll also visit Heri es-Souani, the vast royal granaries and stables, and the impressive Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. A stroll through Place El Hedim, the bustling main square opposite Bab Mansour, offers a glimpse into local life.
Depending on time, you might have some brief free time to explore the souks of Meknes before we begin our return journey to Fes. You'll be dropped off at your accommodation in the early evening, enriched by a day of historical discovery and cultural immersion.
